What Are the Most Common Types of Finishes You Use?

We use Hardwoods in our furniture very intentionally. These wood species are naturally more resistant to the normal wear and tear that dining tables and other furniture will experience. This means that the wood we use is already scratch and dent resistant and we strive to use additional protective finishes that will highlight and maintain the natural beauty and durability of the wood.

We proudly use high-quality, water-based wood finishes on our pieces to protect both your home and the environment. These ultra-low VOC finishes offer exceptional durability while reducing harmful fumes, creating a safer indoor space for you and your family (and us!). By choosing water-based products, we’re able to deliver a beautiful, long-lasting finish without the environmental impact of traditional solvents—because your health and our planet matter just as much as our craftsmanship.

Below are our most popular wood finishes:

  • Water-Based Conversion Varnish

    • A clear, water-based varnish formulated for high-end furniture, tabletops, and cabinetry applications that require exceptional surface hardness and water resistance. It has everything you want in a hardwearing, durable wood finish that is also in a non-flammable, ultra-low VOC formula making it safe for your health (and ours!) and the environment

        • This varnish matches the high durability associated with solvent and oil-based coatings while remaining an ultra-low VOC, HAPS-Free (“Hazardous Air Pollutants”), and PFAS-Free (also known as “forever chemicals”, which can take a very long time to break down, and have been linked to potential health issues) wood finish

        • Most of our hardwood furniture that require a heavy-duty finish (such as our dining tables) receives this final protective topcoat

  • Rubio Monocoat (Hardwax Oil)

    • Rubio Monocoat is a wood finish that colors and protects wood in one single layer. Importantly, it is plant-based and contains 0% VOC (Note: “Volatile Organic Compounds” include a variety of gasses/chemicals, many of which are known to be toxic and may cause short- and long-term adverse health effects to those exposed. Common sources of VOC’s are paints, paint strippers and other solvents, aerosol sprays, cleaners/disinfectants, as well as many other  traditional forms of wood preservatives/protectants).

    • Rubio Monocoat works by forming a molecular bond with the topmost fibers of the wood. This results in a durable, water-resistant finish, all while keeping the natural look and feel of the wood. Rubio Monocoat offers 50+ colors, which can be used on both hardwoods and softwoods!

    • Many of our medium-duty hardwood items (such as floating shelves) receive Rubio Monocoat as the final finish
